Health care access in Pittsburgh and PA

Senator Costa Fights for Health Care Access in Pittsburgh and PAThis summer, the order that requires UPMC and Highmark to work together is scheduled to expire and I am not confident that they will choose to work together and reach a solution before then. That’s why I’m introducing legislation that will require any integrated health care delivery system to accept payment from any willing insurer.
If they’re not able to reach an agreement on their own, they will be mandated to enter arbitration to find a solution. They would also be prohibited from charging unreasonable rates for certain insurers.

Health care is a human right, and battles between giant health system conglomerates can’t get in between you and your doctors. We need UPMC and Highmark to put patients before profits.

I’ll keep you updated on the progress of my legislation as we move forward.

Women’s History Month

Women’s History MonthMarch is Women’s History Month, and around the country, we honor and recognize the women that have made lasting contributions to their fields.

Women’s History Month was originally just a single day in March; the first one was celebrated on March 8 of 1911. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter declared in a presidential proclamation that the week of March 8 would be National Women’s History Week, but within a few years, many states were already celebrating Women’s History Month and Congress acknowledged the monthlong celebration in 1987.

Last month, I learned so much about African American men and women for Black History Month from your suggestions and featured someone every day on my Facebook page. I’m going to do the same thing this month for women from our region. I hope you’ll follow along and I’d love to hear your suggestions. Share them on my Facebook or website.

In the 43rd

On this week’s episode of In The 43rd, I visited the brand-new location of the Oakmont Bakery. I was blown away by the quantity and quality of the pastries they’re producing. They gave me a tour of their spectacular display cases and took me back to the kitchen where they put me to work. It was a fun episode; you can watch it here.
