Steel Announces $33,200
Scholarship
funds made possible through a donation by U. S. Steel through
Homestead, PA – (April 7, 2010) – U. S. Steel and Bridge Educational Foundation announced $33,200 of EITC scholarship donations for pre-kindergarten programs today at Ascension School in Homestead, PA. Representatives from U. S. Steel joined State Senators Sean Logan and Jay Costa, Heidi Tappe from State Representative Chelsa Wagner’s office and State Representatives Marc Gergely, Bill Kortz and Dave Levdansky for this announcement to the local preschools and families. Bridge Educational Foundation is a scholarship organization based in Harrisburg under one of the best government programs in the country – Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program and provides a bridge between Pennsylvania businesses and students. The Foundation has made a difference in the lives of more than 5,300 Pennsylvania families with students in over 370 schools spread out across 48 counties. “For the last few years U. S. Steel has been pleased to provide Mon Valley families and students scholarships through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program. In our uncertain economic times these scholarships are making it possible for local families to choose pre-kindergarten education for their children. Providing these scholarship funds to the children and families of local schools is one more way for U. S. Steel to get involved and make a positive and lasting impact on the communities where we do business,” said U. S. Steel’s Chris Masciantonio. Teachers, families and students of the schools listed below attended to support the EITC program and to thank U. S. Steel for their tuition assistance and the local legislators for their support of the EITC Program as a whole. The following local schools will be receiving significant pre-kindergarten scholarships: 4 Kids Early Learning Center - Braddock Ascension School – Homestead Bishop Leonard – St. Mary of the Mount Academy - Pittsburgh Good Shepherd Christian Preschool - Pittsburgh Monroeville United Methodist Preschool – Monroeville St. Agnes School – West Mifflin St. Clare of Assisi School – Clairton St. Gabriel School - Pittsburgh Tender Care Learning Center - Clairton The scholarship donation announced today is part of the Pennsylvania Pre-Kindergarten EITC program. The Pre-Kindergarten initiative provides companies with a tax credit equal to 100 percent of the first $10,000 contributed to a pre-kindergarten scholarship organization during the taxable year, and may receive a tax credit equal to 90 percent of any additional amount contributed during the year, up to a maximum of $100,000 per year. Chris Masciantonio, general manager of State Governmental Affairs and Lisa Roudabush, General Manager of USS Mon Valley Works were in attendance representing U. S. Steel and enjoyed meeting and talking with the students and families that will benefit from the scholarships their company funds. "I am pleased to work with U. S. Steel to bring funds to parents of children attending local schools. They are wonderful schools that provide quality education to their students," said State Senator Sean Logan. Senator Costa stated, "I'm pleased to be able to attend this presentation by the Bridge Educational Foundation. The Foundation and the EITC Program that helps to support it are important parts of the educational landscape in Pennsylvania and I am proud to support them." The event concluded with Pete Gleason stating, “Education is the key to the future of our youth. With support from businesses like U. S. Steel and local interested citizens, we are boosting the educational achievement opportunities for children and families that would otherwise not be available to them.”
