Vacant lots and empty buildings will soon become new housing and retail space following the November 19th announcement that state funds will help revitalize locations in Homestead, Munhall, Forest Hills and the South Side.

Joining local officials and representatives of local development agencies, Gov. Ed Rendell visited the historic Homestead Bakery to announce $4.8 million in Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency funds for area projects.

Local project receiving a portion of the funds include:

Historic Homestead Bakery, Homestead -- $480,000 to convert the building into apartments and retail space

Homestead/Munhall Revitalization -- $1.37 million to help build 18 homes in Homestead and seven homes in Munhall on vacant land near the Carnegie Library.

Beneficial Building -- $250,000 to convert the building on Carson Street into studio apartments and commercial space

Lennox Building -- $260,500 to rehabilitate buildings on Ardmore Blvd. in Forest Hills.
