HOMESTEAD GRAYS BRIDGE REHABILITATION PROJECT DRAWS TO A CLOSE

HOMESTEAD, October 18, 2007 - -
State Sen. Jay Costa (D-Allegheny) participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the completion of the two-year rehabilitation of the Homestead Grays Bridge.

The $36.2-million project, completed without closing the 70-year-old bridge completely to traffic, involved:
 
-- Strengthening the superstructure of the bridge by repairing deteriorated steel
-- Replacing the the East ramp onto the bridge
-- Constructing a new retaining wall adjacent to the East ramp
-- Replacing the traffic barrier on the bridge
-- Replacing the majority of the bridge's bearings
-- Abrasively blasting off the old paint and repainting the bridge with a three-coat paint system
-- Repaving the bridge deck and adjacent roadway
-- Replacing sidewalks on both sides of the bridge
